Conor McGregor suffered a broken leg in the first round of his fight against Dustin Poirier at UFC 264.

Conor McGregor was set to fight Dustin Poirier at UFC 264. However, on the first round of the match, McGregor broke his leg and had to be taken out of the match.

‘You never want to gain a victory that way,’ Poirier says after McGregor fractures his leg in the UFC.

After fracturing his leg at UFC 264 on Saturday night in Las Vegas, Conor McGregor was sensationally beaten for the second time in two bouts.

The 32-year-old Irishman was stopped in the first round by Dustin Poirier, the former interim lightweight champion.

The fight was halted by physicians seconds before the conclusion of the round due to his ankle turning over as he walked backwards, giving Poirier his second consecutive victory in the trilogy.

“This isn’t over,” McGregor said emphatically.

“If I have to take it outside, let’s take it outside,” he said as he sat on the canvas with his ankle in a protective cast before being stretchered out of the ring.

McGregor’s lower tibia in his left shin has been fractured, according to UFC president Dana White.

McGregor had won a first-round TKO against Poirier at UFC 178 in 2014, but the American, who is also 32, evened the score at UFC 257 in January.

It meant the rivalry was in tip-top shape going into their trilogy fight in Las Vegas, where Poirier triumphed despite the circumstances.

The battle was fast-paced, with McGregor switching tactics from the last bout and launching a barrage of strikes.

Poirier, on the other hand, maintained his calm and pressed forward with a barrage of punches after fighting off McGregor’s early assaults, ultimately pushing the fight against the cage.

McGregor tried to catch Poirier off guard with a guillotine choke, but the American remained cool and escaped before pounding McGregor from top position with hard punches and elbows.

When the battle went to the feet, both men tried to deliver massive punches, with McGregor falling backwards and twisting his ankle. The Irishman was rescued by the buzzer as Poirier piled on the pressure in quest of a finish.

However, it was clear almost away that McGregor had sustained a severe injury, with replays showing his leg fracturing as he took a step backward.

McGregor is dragged away from the octagon.

A sweltering environment

The event was the first time the UFC has performed in front of a full house in its hometown since UFC 248 in March 2020, when the 20,000-seat T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas was filled to capacity.

The high degree of anticipation was due in large part to an ill-tempered fight week in which McGregor turned up the heat on Poirier as the bout approached in an effort to get under the Louisiana man’s skin.

While the build-up to their second fight at UFC 257 was surprisingly friendly, tensions were at an all-time high before the trilogy battle, with McGregor delivering a frightening threat to his opponent ahead of fight night, saying, “I’m going to make this guy pay for his actions with his life. And I really mean it! “after their showdown at the ceremonial weigh-ins on Friday.

It meant that by the time both men made their way to the octagon, the atmosphere inside the stadium was electrifying.

And emotions were still high at the end of the fight, with Poirier claiming that McGregor’s injury was caused by a checked leg kick, with his slip later in the round aggravating the damage and prompting the stoppage.

“He broke it on a blow, then he fractured it in one of the checks at the start of the fight. He started kicking me hard, and I sensed something “he said

“There’s no turning back now,” the American concluded. “He said he was going to kill me and that I would be buried here. You don’t speak about people like that. I hope he returns safely to his lovely family.”

McGregor scowled at the assessment, insisting that the competition between the two was far from finished.

Dustin PoirierAfter escaping a guillotine choke towards the conclusion of the first, Poirier was on top.

‘McGregor’s legacy can’t be built on this.’

“Conor McGregor can’t finish his history on this, a fluke accident,” says Nick Peet, MMA writer on Radio 5 Live. It’s not going to sit well with him.

“Let’s not forget that we only had one round of action, and Dustin Poirier won it unequivocally.”

“You wanted a definitive ending so the trilogy could conclude, but the trilogy, in my view, hasn’t finished yet.”

“Something else must be seen. It doesn’t sit well with me to finish it here. Poirier-McGregor isn’t finished, in my opinion.”

“It was a very dominating first round from Dustin Poirier, it’s just a pity to see it finish the way it did,” Welsh UFC bantamweight Jack Shore said on Radio 5 Live. It does detract from the fact that it results in an injury.

“There’s unfinished business,” says the narrator. McGregor is a fighter first and foremost. He’ll always want to fight, no matter what else is going on in his life.

“He won’t want to go out like this, to let this be the last chapter. He’ll return, and he’ll have a variety of choices.”

What does the future hold for both men?

Poirier will fight for the lightweight championship against undisputed 155-pound champion Charles Oliveira, who will be in attendance in Las Vegas.

McGregor’s future, on the other hand, seems to be less clear.

Due to the severity of his injuries, he may not be able to return to fighting shape for some time. However, whenever he is ready to return, his celebrity status means he will have a wide range of choices.

The Irishman is still the UFC’s greatest box-office attraction, but with four stoppage losses in his last seven fights – and just one victory at lightweight in the UFC – he’ll need to beat a genuine challenger to get a chance at the lightweight title.

McGregor, on the other hand, may choose for a third trilogy battle with Nate Diaz, the first man to beat him inside the cage, while a meeting with “BMF” champion Jorge Masvidal could provide the sort of stylistic match-up the Dubliner would certainly like.

Rafael dos Anjos is another possibility. The two were scheduled to fight for the lightweight championship at UFC 196, but the Brazilian’s fractured foot caused him to withdraw from the event. Dos Anjos, who was engaged in an enraged confrontation with McGregor earlier in the week, was brought in as a back-up fighter for Saturday’s main event.

Then there’s the allure of getting back into boxing. McGregor was set to fight Manny Pacquiao until his loss to Poirier in January disrupted those plans, and the fight may be rescheduled once McGregor is fully recovered.

There’s also the possibility of facing YouTuber-turned-prizefighter Jake Paul, who has frequently challenged him to a boxing battle, and a rematch with Floyd Mayweather, which both men have publicly discussed.

Given the circumstances of Saturday night in Las Vegas, McGregor is most likely to face Poirier for the fourth time when he returns.

The very finest of the rest

Gilbert Burns, a previous welterweight championship contender, retained his title with a unanimous decision win against another former title challenger Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson in the night’s co-main event.

Burns used a combination of wrestling and hitting to put Thompson on the back foot, earning 29-28 scores on all three scorecards before announcing fights with Nate Diaz, Jorge Masvidal, and Leon Edwards.

Also on the main card, Australian heavyweight Tai Tuivasa made a big impression on the Las Vegas crowd by dancing to the Spice Girls’ Wannabe on his way to the octagon, then stunningly knocking out Greg Hardy before celebrating with a series of’shoeys’ (drinking beer from a shoe) in front of the crowd.

Sean O’Malley, a rising bantamweight contender, opened the main event with a spectacular performance, finishing tough short-notice newcomer Kris Moutinho with 27 seconds left.

On the preliminary program, Dricus du Plessis, a former KSW champion from South Africa, knocked out American Trevin Giles with a straight right in the second round of their middleweight fight.
