The Miami Dolphins are officially punting on the 2021 season and setting Tua Tagovailoa up for catastrophic failure.
The Dolphins were 5-11 in the 2018 season, which led to their first losing campaign since 2008. Now they are set to fire coach Adam Gase and general manager Chris Grier with little expectation of success for the rest of the year or next under interim head coaches Dan Campbell and Dowell Loggains. The team is also considering punting on its 2021 season as well if it doesn’t turn things around before then.

The Dolphins would have told you before the season started that they saw themselves as big “buyer” possibilities. They’d spent the previous two seasons bolstering their squad and fleshing out their depth chart in order to establish themselves as a postseason contender.
In 2020, they came close. Miami, on the other hand, was in a great position to break their postseason drought when the new expanded playoff system was introduced in 2021.
That reality, however, has clearly not materialized. The Dolphins must now turn their attention to the future and begin accumulating draft capital. Perhaps this money will be used to entice Watson away from the Houston Texans, or perhaps it will be used to bolster the Dolphins’ squad.
In any case, a 1-7 club must sell before the trade deadline.
DeVante Parker, a wide receiver, has been linked to a trade.

DeVante Parker is at the top of the Miami trade rumors list. He’s an experienced wide receiver who has yet to form a positive connection with Tagovaila, according to NFL source Ian Rapoport.
DeVante Parker, a wide receiver for the Miami Dolphins, has battled injuries but should be back on the field today. Parker is seasoned and, if he remains healthy, could be a dynamic player, thanks to the remainder of a $7.75 million basic contract. Miami has had inquiries regarding him from other teams.

For the Dolphins, this is a no-brainer. Parker is approaching 30 years old and is still dealing with health issues. His pass-catching approach doesn’t mesh well with Tagovailoa’s. Tagovailoa tends to keep things close to the line of scrimmage, while Parker favors 50/50 jump balls beyond the field.
When you include in Parker’s $7.75 million base salary, the Dolphins have plenty of reasons to get rid of him.

While the Dolphins have plenty of reasons to unload Parker before the deadline, it’s worth noting that trading Tagovailoa before the deadline sets him up for an even worse second half.
Due to the ongoing Watson rumors, Tagovailia seems to be struggling to maintain his starting spot week after week. Taking a starting WR out of the equation just complicates things for him. Tagovailoa, on the other hand, will need additional weapons or, at the very least, a better offensive line in the future.
Regardless, the Dolphins are 0-7 on the season. They built this bed, and now they must sleep on it. That doesn’t mean Tagovailoa should be pleased with the front office’s current trajectory. The rookie quarterback’s job in Miami might easily be jeopardized if he has a bad second half of the season.
